With rising fuel costs and the recent horse market being flooded with unfavorable stock, we are aspiring to create a place available for Sellers/Buyers to meet in one location so that those looking for a horse can have the opportunity to meet the owners and see how a horse rides and behaves without having to take the risk of going to an auction. We have considered taking one weekend a month and making our property open to those wanting to sell a horse and for the public to come out, view, and ride a horse (or horses) which they are interested in. Due to continuously rising fuel prices, it is an expenditure to travel any distance to just view one horse. One of the reasons that our business has been successful is that we have continually kept multiple horses on the property which has allowed buyers to have several horses to choose from. However, with the rising cost of feed we have decided to cut back on our herd size, but we still feel it’s better for those searching for a horse to have a variety to choose from without having to go to an auction. Unfortunately, with the horse market being swamped with lame, sick, and crazy stock, more and more horses are being drugged in hopes for a sale. Barn riders can make a horse do thing in a small enclosure that makes them appear to be well broke which once in your hands will know little to nothing at all. Horses represented as “children’s” mounts two days later prove to be next PRCA bronc of the month, and more and more people are getting hurt. We ourselves have tried driving hours to look at one horse only to find the horse is not as it was represented whether it be lame, starved, missing an eye or an ear and so the expense got so much we were left with buying auction horses; hoping we picked the few good horses to sell to the public.
What we propose to do depending on the feed back we receive from our web site and this posting is the following.
1. Catalog type sale (no auctioneer, you sell and show your own horse) - Those wanting to sell horses, can send pictures, video and descriptions of there horse and I will post them on my web site for the month prior to our weekend trade day.
I can advertise each horse on the numerous web sites for the seller and really put there equine out in the public view. There will be no commission, total cost is the 65.00.
2. The 65.00 cost will include: Advertising, posting of video and pictures and the weekend at our place to show your horse to the public. We will have arena, barrels, poles, trail riding, round pens, and anything specific you need to show your horse and allow others to try your animal out.
3. We hope to have vendors available with tack, western art, leather goods, and a concession area. We hope to have riders here that will help you show your horse if you are unable to. We are talking to some local farriers, so that if you want your horses trimmed or have shoes put on your livestock that will also be available. We have plenty of space for trailers and you are welcome to spend the weekend, but we do not have electrical or water hook-ups. We might have to charge a nominal fee for those staying to cover clean up.
4. Why we think this will work for sellers: You will not have to advertise and answer the same questions to different potential buyers over and over. You will not have set up appointments with buyers and then have them not show up, after you went and caught the horse and got him ready for someone to see or ride. No one will be on your property; they will all be in one local area favorable to anything they want to see the horse do. There is a greater opportunity to sale your horse with numerous people coming all at one time.
5. Why we think this will work for buyers: Less driving, looks at a variety, see horses being ridden and have the ability to try the horse for yourself. Meet the owners, no middle man, and no pressure to buy. Tack available for sale and have the opportunity to be able to go home with everything you need.
6. We hope to have trailers, saddles, tack, hay, and farrier/blacksmith services available on sale days.
7. We will be able to board a few head of horses for buyers until they can arrange for hauling. We will do some hauling for buyers, depending on distance. It would be 1.25 per mile round trip-mileage based on map quest-our property to where the horse will be delivered.
